OPEC, it’s time to end the age of fossil fuels!

Researchers agree: We are in the middle of a climate crisis. Transitioning to renewable energy sources is one of the central tasks of our time to avert the impending climate catastrophe [1].

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) doesn’t want to acknowledge this and is blindly following its path: According to its recently published forecast, OPEC does not intend to reduce its production of fossil fuels such as crude oil and natural gas, but to expand it by 2040. At the same time OPEC claims to be “fully engaged and supportive of the Paris Agreement” [2].

That just doesn’t add up: In order to achieve the climate goals, the member states would have to cut the production of crude oil and natural gas by at least half [3]!

OPEC ministers will meet again in Vienna beginning of December and discuss its plans for the coming years. That's why we need to take action now: We can't keep watching while a small minority continues to exploit and destroy our planet! Together we can bring about a shift in energy policies. And they are already afraid: OPEC General Secretary Mohammad Barkindo described the youthful climate movement as "perhaps the greatest threat" to the oil industry [4].

This is why we appeal to OPEC and its member states:

It’s time to end the age of fossil fuels! Adhere to the Paris climate goals!
